  • Notes
    • Peter served in the military estimated 1775/76 in New Jersey for the most part. When the American Revolution had begun, eighteen year-old Peter Apgar joined the local militia perhaps in 1775 or early 1776. He enlisted as a private in the Lebanon Battalion, 4th Regiment of the Hunterdon County, NJ Militia Commanded by Col. John Mehelm. Major Godfrey Rhinehart commanded the battalion and Captain Benjamin Cooper, the company. He saw some actions and lived through the war. He guarded a bridge near his father's farm and when not on duty, would work on the farm.

On June 3, 1776, a battalion of five Hunterdon and three Somerset companies under Lt. Col. Phillip Johnston were sent to reinforce Gen. George Washington's battered Continental army, who were trenching themselves in at Long Island, NY for a large British and Hessian attack. On August 26-27, 1776, the British and Hessian force attacked. Col. Johnston's NJ Battalions were in the heat of the battle. The badly outnumbered and outmaneuvered exhausted, NJ battalions stood their ground, until ordered to retreat. This was his most dangerous and significant contribution to the war effort. Peter did various Militia duties for the next year, but none involved dangerous battles.

A stone has been placed on his grave and many of the Apgar's from his line have joined the Daughters of the American Revolution as also the Sons of the American Revolution. The Apgar Family Assoc. honored both Peter A. and Conrad Apgar 10. his uncle, as Revolutionary war veterans at one of their Reunions.
